Just Listen: The Ninth Wave – I’m Only Going To Hurt You
The Ninth Wave
I’m Only Going To Hurt You
Words by Jim Mumby
Any of those smuggly-smirking melophiles with their highly systemised record collections will be left head-scratching before slowly reaching towards the ‘Dungeon-Synth/Post-Punk-Noir’ section, momentarily pausing with a mindset to edging The Ninth Wave ever closer to the ‘Angst-IDM/New Beat’ sounds of Confetti’s and Rezz.
Discernably the more dance-friendly song from the mini-album Happy Days, grizzled guitars give way to a programmed menu of metallic kling-klangs and eerie vocals within sample heavy layerings over those trademark bludgeoning bass-synths and drum machines, all meticulously sequenced beneath Haydn’s cavernous vocal tones. Not without it’s desolate content however, I’m Only Going To Hurt You concerns the tribulations of a presumed torn-between relationship and the wretched foresight that it will only conclude in heartfelt pain. Heavy stuff perhaps, and a sobering message to those bearing a fleeting heart.
Nonetheless, the stylishly abstract production and pulsating energy of I’m Only Going To Hurt You makes this a standout song and worthy of it’s (at the time of writing) quarter of a million streams.
