Just Listen: Francis – Rare/Ocean in Gold

Rare/Ocean in Gold

Elena Katrina

I’ve often been found discussing with people “what happened to Frances?” Her debut album, Things I’ve Never Said, was sure, I thought, to see her off toward superstardom. It was 3 years between that release and any new material. Today I decided again to check if there was any news and spotted that in the chaos of 2020 I had missed a release but that as luck would have it, Frances released two new tracks today!

Rare and Ocean in Gold are beautifully and expertly constructed as I would expect and Frances’ vocal simply shines on Ocean In Gold. Rare has a gentle undulation of piano notes at the beginning which gives a real warmth against the electronic background. Ocean In Gold demonstrates Frances’ ability to sing you a picture, to musically paint you a story and it’s sentimental and beautiful not just in its theme but in its stripped-down delivery; vocals and a piano.
