JUST LISTEN: The Golden Dregs – Nobody Ever Got Rich (By Making People Sad)

The Golden Dregs – Nobody Ever Got Rich (By Making People Sad)

Words: Sammy Sadler

I have to start this review by summing this track up in just one word – and that word is WOW. Nobody Ever Got Rich (By Making People Sad) isn’t the typical jingly indie-pop melody that I usually jump to write words for, it’s much more mellow and it commands your undivided attention right from that first note.

I’m ashamed to say that this is the first single I’ve heard from Falmouth-based The Golden Dregs, AKA Benjamin Woods, and it’s a soothing, indie delight. For fans of the likes of Nick Cave and Lou Reed, Nobody Ever Got Rich (By Making People Sad) opens on a dramatic drone and steady beat before introducing fragile piano keys and gorgeous cello tones courtesy of Kath Williams.

Woods’ husky croak adds to the mysterious swirling atmospheric soundscape and you’ll have reached the end of the glorious five minutes of musical pleasure before you even realise it. A perfect track, more of this in my inbox please!
