Just Listen: Fontaines DC – A Hero’s Death

A Hero’s Death

Words by Gary Lambert

Fontaines DC pretty much came in as the champion in the 2019 Album of the Year contests with the overwhelming love for Dogrel; and it shows how much creativity and desire is flowing in the band that they have already announced their second album and launched the build up with the release of the title track, A Hero’s Death.

Although the band have looked to strike whilst the iron is hot, this release gives a tempting glimpse into their natural progression with a less aggressive but still highly charged vocal repeating the refrain of life ain’t always empty throughout the song along with the advertising slogan tagline verses.  Also the doo-ooo and ba-ba-ba Motown-slash-garage-band backing vocals lift the song too.

With jagged guitars and a thick, heady production, there is no doubting the intensity of A Hero’s Death.  If this is representative of the album of the same name, we’re not going to be changing our album of the year champion.

A Hero’s Death, Fontaines DC’s second album, will be out 31 July 2020 via Partisan Records.
